Built for Life: Why USM Modular Furniture Resonates with Alteriors and Our Clients
From the Desk of Alteriors Owners Jacob Visutskie and Monika Durczak
At Alteriors, we’ve always believed that great design isn’t just about looks — it’s about longevity, flexibility, and the quiet confidence of pieces that adapt as life evolves. That’s why USM modular furniture holds a special place in our showroom and our hearts.
Our journey with USM began not through a catalog or sales pitch, but through a chance encounter. Monika and I stumbled upon two USM display units while wandering through Nordstrom during its Ottawa closure. We weren’t expecting much, maybe a few discounted jackets. Instead, we found something far more lasting.
Seeing those pieces up close completely shifted our perception. We were struck not only by their design, but by the engineering — the clarity, the restraint, the sense that these were pieces meant to grow with you.
We brought them home. Not long after, we knew USM had to be part of Alteriors.
Modularity That Matters
What first captivated us, and continues to win over our clients, is USM Haller’s remarkable modularity. It’s not modular in a trendy, gimmicky sense. It’s modular in the way nature is modular: adaptable, purposeful, endlessly scalable. A bookcase today becomes a media unit tomorrow. A workspace becomes a gallery display.
Rather than replacing furniture, you evolve it. Add a few components, change the configuration, and your furniture continues to meet your needs without starting from scratch.
This is design that acknowledges life’s fluctuations — moves, growing families, shifting routines — and meets it with grace and precision.
Quiet Strength, Thoughtful Craft
USM’s design philosophy is “less is more,” and they mean it. There are very few components in a Haller system: precision steel tubing, powder-coated aluminum panels, soft-close drawers. But that simplicity allows for something remarkable: intense focus on quality. When you handle a piece, you feel it — the craftsmanship, the weight, the intention.
It’s not often that a product manages to be both timeless and deeply useful, but USM walks that line perfectly. There’s a reason the system hasn’t changed in decades, and why it’s earned a place in the MoMA permanent collection.
Clients See It, Then They Get It
There’s almost always an “aha” moment when people see USM in our showroom. At first glance, they admire the clean lines and industrial elegance. But once they understand that every unit can be customized, reimagined, or expanded, something clicks.
They start imagining possibilities — how this system could solve a design challenge or elevate a space in a way they hadn’t considered.
It’s not just about luxury or aesthetics, It’s about sustainability, too. USM pieces aren’t discarded; they’re kept, reconfigured, inherited. Their lifecycle is a long, quiet rebellion against disposable furniture.
The Alteriors Touch
When someone chooses to explore USM through Alteriors, we treat it as a collaboration. We listen. We walk them through possibilities. We design together. Whether it’s a single shelving unit or a full office environment, we offer 3D visualizations and on-site support to make sure the final installation reflects not just the space, but the person living or working in it.
In many ways, USM reflects what we believe as a store: thoughtful design, built with intention, that adapts to real life. It’s furniture that earns its place — and keeps it for decades to come.
If you’re curious about how USM could fit into your space, whether it’s a focused home office, a growing media setup, or something entirely unique, we’d love to help you explore the options.
